Space City Credit Union is deemed an "essential business" and will remain open to our members during this time. While our branch lobbies will remain closed (exception limited availability at LaPorte), our drive-thru on Harrisburg will be open regular business hours, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and will continue to offer full services.

Our phones and electronic services (web and mobile) are also available to assist with loans and new accounts. You may continue to call us at (713) 222-1244. To apply for a loan or open a new account online click here, you can also log in to your account through our online banking or our mobile app. The mobile app can be download through the Apple Store or Google Play.

And a word of caution, this virus could spread rapidly over the coming days and we urge all members to obey the County stay at home order and use our electronic services.  Protect yourself and you will protect others. If we all work together, we could significantly restrict the spread of the virus and return to a business as usual state sooner rather than later.

Coronavirus Scams
The Coronavirus (COVID-19) has been a windfall for fraudsters as they exploit the global thirst for knowledge on the virus. Fraudsters have launched Coronavirus-themed phishing attacks to deliver malware – typically credential-stealing banking Trojans. The phishing emails purport to be from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Fraudsters have also created fake websites to exploit Johns Hopkins University’s interactive Coronavirus dashboard to spread malware.

Fraudsters are exploiting the global thirst for knowledge about the virus by launching Coronavirus-themed phishing attacks to spread credential stealing malware. The emails, which contain an infected attachment or a link to a malicious website, are made to appear like they come from the CDC or the WHO. The WHO posted an article on its website warning users of this scam.

Fraudsters have also exploited Johns Hopkins University’s interactive Coronavirus dashboard containing an interactive map that tracks Coronavirus statistics by region. Cybersecurity firms have identified several fake Coronavirus interactive maps that infect user devices with credential-stealing malware. Fraudsters are circulating links to these malicious websites containing Coronavirus maps through social media and phishing emails.

Security blogger Brian Krebs reported several Russian cybercrime forums started selling infection kits that exploits John Hopkins University’s interactive Coronavirus dashboard as part of a Java-based malware deployment scheme.

There have also been reports of other Coronavirus-themed phishing campaigns aiming to spread malware, including:

  • Coronavirus advice-themed phishing emails purporting to provide advice on how to protect against the virus. The emails might claim to be from medical experts near Wuhan, China where the Coronavirus started.
  • Workplace policy-themed phishing emails about Coronavirus targeting an organization’s employees. For example, the emails may purport to come from the organization’s HR department alerting employees of a new pandemic policy.
  • You may also hear that banks and credit unions are shutting down doe to a government mandated lock-down.  This is false and there is no need to worry about access to your funds.

Risk Mitigation

  • Beware of the Coronavirus-themed phishing scams and never open attachments or click on links.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF SPACE CITY CREDIT UNION: Scams abound during this time of crisis. People are spreading misinformation and you should be informed. Credit Unions and Banks are considered “essential services” and will not be shut down during a local, state, or federal lockdown. Click here for proof.

Your money is safest here with us rather than in your pocket or at home. Thieves are praying on people who withdraw large sums of cash - you could lose it all and no insurance will cover it. Your funds are safe and insured here with us. Take what you need and no more.

For your protection, during this pandemic, we are limiting cash withdrawals to $3,500. If you need more funds for a purchase or another specific need, we will wire your funds free of charge. It is not safe to carry large sums of cash. We appreciate your understanding. These are special circumstances, and this will all be over soon, and we will be back to business as usual. We are here to safeguard your money and protect you from financial scams.
